Compact Backhoe Loaders
Full sized backhoes are meant for lifting and moving various materials such as dirt, logs, and large construction debris. Compact backhoes are meant more for digging below ground level. They are ideal for digging trenches, stump removal, and planting trees. A compact backhoe loader is also ideal for jobs where a full size backhoe will not fit or can't access the area. They are used for landscaping, digging, spreading material, and loading. They are commonly used in engineering and small construction jobs such as building houses and road construction. They are gaining popularity for use on farms for tilling, plowing, digging, and more.
Because of their compact size they are more fuel efficient than large, full sized backhoes which can save money during jobs. Their smaller size also means they are not able to dig as deep or lift as much as full sized backhoes. This can mean a job will take more hours to perform than using a full sized backhoe. Because of these drawbacks, it's not always financially practical to purchase a compact backhoe loader for your company. It can make better financial sense to use a rental company as needed.
The bucket on a compact backhoe loader can also be replaced with grapples, augers, stump grinders, and breakers. You can attach these extra devices because the two hydraulic cylinders at the end of the arms are retractable. To allow these attachments to be used easier there is a tilt-rotator enhancement. Most compact backhoe loaders have easy to attach mounting systems. Depending on the manufacture, they may also have auxiliary hydraulic circuits that make it easier and simpler to attach additional equipment.

Because these compact backhoes are designed with a heavy top they are more likely to tip over. To compensate for this most manufactures have hydraulic outriggers in use when digging and lowering the bucket attachment for extra support and stability. There are many different brands of compact backhoe loaders and most rental equipment companies offer them for rent. The more popular brands are Kubota, Mitsubishi, Shibaura, Hinomoto, Iseki Yanmar, Volvo, and Caterpillar. Each brand has different specs as far as load weight and digging depth. Some have more attachments and are easier to attach.
